西洋紫陽花の両性花
Bisexual flower of Hydrangea macrophylla f. hortensis
両性花は、額紫陽花 (Hydrangea macrophylla f．normalis) の場合は、
偽花 (pseudoanthium) の中央に集まり、西洋紫陽花の場合は
装飾花 (ornamental flower) の間に隠れるように咲く。
装飾花の花弁のように見えるものは萼片 (sepal)で、
その中央にある花は機能的には退化している中性花 (neutral flower)。
咲いたり咲かなかったりするしね。
紫陽花のように、小花 (floret) がたくさん集まって
一つの大きな花に見える花を偽花 (pseudoanthium) という。

紫陽花に集まる虫たちは両性花を目指し、
人は装飾花に踊る。
